It has been a decade since my last experience as a player in a roleplaying game. However, the recent session in Abrahams GAG RPG with Cavin and Al reignited my passion for this form of interactive story-creation. The game had an anime theme, and I decided to dive into it with fresh eyes, choosing a unique character and immersing myself in the world of Neo-Dokio.
Abraham, our Game Master, took us on an unexpected journey right from the start. I was grateful that I hadn't spoiled it by reading too much about the game beforehand. The opening NPC and the encounters with the citizens of Neo-Dokio showcased Abraham's incredible imagination. It was an exciting and fun session that left me eagerly anticipating the next one.
During the session, Cavin faced some challenges in stating his character's actions, but he quickly corrected his mistakes. Abraham maintained strict session rules, emphasizing the importance of taking action to fully engage in the game. Al portrayed his character exceptionally well, and by the end, I couldn't help but think how amazing it would be to see our created characters in an actual anime series.
Being a proficient roleplayer requires practice, but once you grasp the fundamentals, it becomes easier to immerse yourself in the game. However, it's disheartening to find that many YouTube channels, such as Bob World Builder, DM's Lair, and Seth Skorkowsky, focus on selling tips, tricks, and game system patches instead of emphasizing the essence of roleplaying itself.
